H.E. Mr. Aaviksoo was appointed the Minister of Defence in 2007. Prior to his current position he was the Rector of the University of Tartru, where in 1976 he graduated cum laude specialized in the theoretical physics from the Department of Physics from the Faculty of Physics and Chemistry. In 1981 he became the Candidate of physics and mathematics at the Institute of Physics of AS. Later he held significant positions at the University of Tartru as well as in the Estonian Government, eg. the Minister of Culture and Education in 1995, and the Minister of Education in 1996. Mr. Aaviksoo cooperates with numerous research organizations and associations such as the Association of European Universities, the Estonian Research and Development Council, the Estonian Informatics Council, the American Physical Society etc. He recieved several awards, including the Order of the White Star (class II) of the Republic of Estonia and the Order of Merit of the Republic of France. Mr Aaviksoo has participated in more than 100 conferences in 23 foreign states and has written more than 100 research papers and over 80 publicist articles.
