Janusz Onyszkiewicz

Mr. Onyszkiewicz studied at the University of Leeds in Great Britain, where he graudated as Doctor Honoris Causa. He also achieved M.Sc and PhD. in pure mathematics. Later he served as a Senior lecturer at the Mathematics Institute of Warsaw University. As a member of the democratic oposition since mid 60’ties, Mr. Onyszkiewicz was active in strikes and demonstrations in 1968 for freedom of speech and research. He was one of the organizers of “Solidarity Movement” in Warsaw region in 1980 and its National Spokesman (until 1989) and a member of the National Executive (Presidium). Mr. Onyszkiewicz was in 1989-2001 Member of the Polish Parliament, member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1989-1991 and the chairman of the Polish delegation to the WEU and NATO Parliamentary Assemblies. He held many significant positions in the Polish government such as the Deputy Minister (1990-1991) and the Minister of National Defence (1991-1993 and 1997-2000).  He is a member of the Democratic Party (Union for Freedom) and its President in 2006-2009, member of the European Parliament (2004-2009) and its vice-president, the vice-president of the Foreign Relation Commission of the EP. Currently he serves as the President of the Council of the Euro-Atlantic Association in Poland, the President of the International Board of the International Centre for Democratic Transition in Budapest and a member of the Executive Committee of the Centre for International Relation in Warsaw.
