H. E. Ljubica Jelušič, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia

Mrs. Jelušič studied international relations and defence studies at the Faculty of Sociology, Political Science and Journalism and graduated with honours in 1985. She received a research award of the Slovenian Research Community for her university thesis on forms of unarmed combat against aggression. As part of the 2000 New Researchers project she earned her Master of Science degree in 1988. In 1992 she earned her PhD degree in defence studies with a thesis on the legitimacy of the military. She completed her postdoctoral studies in military sociology at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels. Since 1985 she educated at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana in the area of defence studies, where she has lectured on polemology, sociology and politology of the military, peace studies, civil-military relations, anthropology of war and peacekeeping operations. In cooperation with the Slovenian Armed Forces she has participated in the senior staff and general staff military education and training at the Command and Staff School. From 2006 to 2008 she was the Executive Secretary of the Research Committee on Armed Forces and Conflict Resolution to the International Sociological Association. She is a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Geneva Centre for Democratic Control of Armed Forces. Within the European Research Group on Military and Society (ERGOMAS) she heads the working group on warriors in peacekeeping, and also cooperates in the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society in the USA. Since 2007 she has been a member of NATO Sociological Research Panel (Human and Societal Dynamics) within the NATO Science for Peace Programme. On 21 November 2008, she took an oath before the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia as the first female defence minister of the Republic of Slovenia.
