Born in 1948, he studied French, German and economics at Cambridge University before starting his career in journalism. He joined the FT in 1975, and became southern Africa correspondent in Johannesburg in 1976. He was Africa editor 1981-84, and then European Community correspondent in Brussels 1984-87. He was Moscow correspondent 1988-91, during perestroika, and chief correspondent in Germany from 1991-94. In 1994 he returned to London as foreign editor, before taking up his present position in 1998. He writes a regular column on foreign affairs, as well as leaders and features.
