Svet sa v posledných desiatich rokoch zmenil a s ním aj bezpečnostné hrozby, ktorým musia štáty čeliť. Severoatlantická aliancia preto pripravuje dokument, ktorý by mal nahradiť Strategickú koncepciu z roku 1999 a reagovať na aktuálne hrozby.

NATO doesn´t have neither financial means, nor the political ambition to be a global cop or nor would NATO ever find a consensus on that. I think we can easily have that vision in the new strategic concept embodied: we need global partners

SCHEFFER: NATO enlargement is the most important instrument in consolidating Europe
NATO enlargement is also one of the most important instruments in consolidating Europe as a whole, free and democratic continent. I therefore expect a new Strategic Concept to signal clearly that the process of NATO enlargement will continue

We cannot afford to approach 21st century challenges with such a 20th century mindset. We must find a new understanding of Allied security – and Allied solidarity – in the age of globalisation. NATO offers an excellent framework – and an invaluable tool –for achieving this. That is why we must not only preserve the Alliance, but use its full potential.

"Severoatlantická aliancia v Afganistane zvíťazí, keď sa bezpečnostné zložky a vláda dokážu postarať o krajinu. Zatiaľ to nefunguje, ale robíme pokroky." povedal pre Pravdu Robert Simmons.
