Secretary General of the Slovak Atlantic Commission

Róbert Vass started his professional career as a president of non-governmental organisation Euro-Atlantic Center in 2002. He had remained in this position for the next four years. In 2006, he was elected the Chairman of the Slovak Atlantic Commission and in 2008 its Secretary General. Under his leadership, SAC has achieved substantial development, opened two offices in Banská Bystrica and Bratislava, and became an exclusive member of Atlantic Treaty Association for Slovakia. He started a tradition of prestigious international security conferences GLOBSEC, organized the accompanying conference of NATO Defence Ministers Meeting in Bratislava – New Challenges-Better Capabilities and established successful magazine Euro-Atlantic Quarterly.

Deputy Secretary General, Program Director

Milan Solár studied International Affairs and Diplomacy at the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, where he received his Master’s degree in 2010. In addition to his study, Milan has been actively involved in non-governmental sphere related to foreign-policy, security and defence issues. Since 2005, he has been a leading member of the Euro-Atlantic Center, where he was responsible for several programs and projects. In 2007, he was elected the President of the organization for a one-year term. Joining the SAC in 2008, Milan has been primarily responsible for communication with the panellists and audience of the two flagship projects of the SAC – the GLOBSEC 2009 and 2010 and the New Challenges-Better Capabilities conference.

Finance Director, Event Manager

Jana Ondrášková joined the team of the Slovak Atlantic Commission in 2008. Among her main responsibilities belong finance management and oraganizational realization of the events accomplishing different types of tasks. The most important events she was involved in are GLOBSEC 2009 and 2010, EU Enlargement in the Balkans in 2011 - Make Not Break conference, the international project "Montenegro on the Way ro Euro-Atlantic Family" as well as New Challenges-Better Capabilities, accompanying conference to the meeting of the defence ministers of the NATO member countries.

 

 

Milan Šuplata
Director, Central European Policy Institute

Milan is the director of the Central European Policy Insititute, which has been established by the Slovak Atlantic Commission in 2011. He started his professional career by organizing the first GLOBSEC conference and later he was put in charge of the Public Relations and Human Resources agendas. In 2010 he led the Visegrad Security Cooperation Initiative project and in the same year completed the Program of Advanced Security Studies at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Milan holds a PhD Degree in International Relations.

 

 

Miriama Gurínová
Director, Youth Leadership Program

Since 2008, Miriama Gurínová has been a member of the SAC. She has been involved in preparations of the Euro-Atlantic Quarterly magazine, GLOBSEC 2009 and 2010 conferences as well as the 15th Anniversary of the SAC event and 5 Years of Slovakia in EU and NATO conference. Miriama studies at the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations of Matej Bel University, Banská Bystrica. She participated in the 14th Portuguese Atlantic Youth Seminar (PAYS) and took an internship at the Atlantic Treaty Association in Brussels in the fall 2009.

 

 

Tomáš Špavelko
Director, Transfer of Know-how Program

Tomáš graduated in international affairs at the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica. He has been with the SAC since 2007, when he started as a Member of the Euro-Atlantic Quarterly’s editorial team, where he later became Editor-in-Chief. Tomáš has participated in the organization of all the major events of the SAC, including the New Challenges, Better Capabilities conference and several GLOBSEC forums. Since 2010 he has been the Project Director of the Improving Democratic Institutions - Door to Europe project, which is focused on the transfer of know-how from the Slovak transformation and pre-accession processes. In 2011 he became a Programme Director of the Transfer of Know-How Programme.

 

 

Ján Cingel
Director, Partnership Development

Jan graduated from international relations at the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations of the Matej Bel University in Banska Bystrica in 2007. Already during studies he joined the non-governmental organization the Euro-Atlantic Center (2002 - 2006)  and later became a member of the executive team of the Slovak Atlantic Commission (2006 - 2008). After this experience he worked at the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic at the Bilateral relations section of the Defence Policy, International Relations and Legislation Department. Jan re-joined the executive team of the SAC in May 2011, where he is now responsible for development of partnerships of the organization, fundraising and he is also working within the Transfer of Know-How Programme. He is regular contributor to the Euro-Atlantic Quarterly magazine.  

 

 

Viktor Škulec
Director, Public Relations

Viktor joined SAC in October 2011 as the head of PR. He is responsible for external communication, the development and execution of PR strategies and content management . Viktor is a graduate from the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Relations of the University of Matej Bel in Banska Bystrica, where he received the Master’s degree in 2004. Before joining SAC Viktor worked on various PR related projects for SAP, NESS, DELL, Nokia Siemens Networks, Schneider Electric, the European Commission and the Norwegian Embassy in Slovakia.

 

 

Martin Šuplata
Technical Support Manager

Martin Šuplata studied International Affairs and Diplomacy at the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, where he graduated in 2011. Martin has been a member of the Slovak Atlantic Commission since 2009. He has been involved as a member of the Public Relations team in the preparations of the New Challenges-Better Capabilities, GLOBSEC 2010 and 2011 conferences. Since July 2011 is Martin responsible for technical support of the organisation.

 

 

Zuzana Kalmanová
Project Assistant

Zuzana, now a fourth-year student of International Relations, has been a member of the SAC since 2009. Recently she acted as a Deputy Editor-in-Chief at the Euro-Atlantic Quarterly magazine and also has contributed to the preparations of the New Challenges-Better Capabilities, GLOBSEC 2010 and 2011 conferences. Zuzana has completed an internship at the Jagello 2000 and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic, and also attended the Danish Atlantic Youth Seminar 2011. Nowadays, Zuzana is coordinating the preparations for the "Smart Security: Regional Cooperation in the Time of Austerity" conference and helping out with the organisation of upcoming GLOBSEC 2012.

 

 

Marek Slobodník
Project Assistant

Marek joined the Commission in September 2011, after finishing his BA in Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London. In the past, he completed an internship at the Permanent Representation of the Slovak Republic to the European Union. At the SAC, Marek is coordinating preparations for the Central European Strategic Forum Chateau Béla 2011, helping out with the organisation of GLOBSEC, and supporting the establishment of the Central European Policy Institute. His fields of interest are the Middle East, its security, geopolitics and the politics of Islam, as well as the politics of the Internet and cybersecurity.

 

 

Michal Skala
Project Assistant

Michal joined the SAC team in September 2011 and has since been involved in projects within the Transfer of Know-How Programme. Before coming to the SAC, Michal completed a professional internship in the Office of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of the Slovak Republic and had worked as a research assistant at the Institute of International Relations in Prague. Michal holds a Master degree in International Relations from the Matej Bel University and a Master of Arts degree in Strategy and International Security from the University of Hull. His professional interests include particularly the theories of international relations, strategic thinking and security studies and their application on current issues in international relations.

 

 

Gayane Tonikyan
Project Assistant

Gayane graduated from the Yerevan State University (Armenia) in 2006 where she received her Master‘s degree in sociology and conflictology. Started from 2003 she participated in sociological researches organized by different organizations such as Armenian Demographic Foundation, Economy and Values Research Center and Civic Development and Partnership Foundation. From 2007 she worked  as a monitoring and evaluation specialist for  the International Center for Human Development in the framework of UNDP‘s “Global Compact” project. Starting from June 2008 Gayane has worked for the Armenian Atlantic Association. She has been conducting researches on NATO and regional security related issues, participating in organizing annual “NATO week in Armenia” and writing analytical papers on international relations issues.  Currently she is conducting her exchange internship with the Slovak Atlantic Commission.

 

 

Andrea Barcajová
Office Manager

Andrea joined the Commission in August 2011. She is currently a second-year student at the School of Economics and Management in Public Administration in Bratislava. Andrea is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of the office, as well as has a whole host of administrative and financial functions, including maintaining the SACs extensive contact list, as well as the organisation’s calendar. Her interests include languages and travelling, both of which were combined in 2010 in Australia, where she completed an eight month-long study abroad programme.
